Psalms 121

Overview.
This psalm is a declaration of steadfast trust in the LORD as the sure keeper of His people. Moving from a reflective question about the source of help to a confident affirmation of God’s unceasing care, the psalm emphasizes divine constancy and protection over every aspect of life. It stands within the collection of Songs of Ascents (Psalms 120–134) as a meditation on God’s faithfulness amid pilgrimage and trial.

• Begins with a searching gaze toward the hills—a common symbol of instability or false refuge—and poses the central question: “Where does my help come from?”
• Answers that help is not found in nature, geography, or human strength, but in the personal, covenant-keeping God who made all things.

Connections.
Following chapter 120, which expresses distress amid hostile surroundings and a longing for peace, this psalm lifts the heart to divine help rather than human resolution. Where the previous psalm reflects exile and inner turmoil, Psalm 121 grounds the pilgrim’s hope in the character of God Himself. The theme of God as keeper prepares for chapter 122, where joy and communal worship in Jerusalem become the outworking of that trust, showing that divine protection enables faithful approach to God’s house.

What it teaches.
God is the sole source of true help, not only as Creator of heaven and earth (WCF 4.1) but as the one who actively preserves His people without lapse or fatigue. His providential care is constant—“neither slumbering nor sleeping”—and extends universally over Israel, the covenant community, and the individual soul. The assurance that the LORD “will keep your going out and your coming in” reflects His covenant faithfulness (HC LD 10), guarding His people in life’s every movement and ultimately preserving them unto eternity. The imagery of shade, sun, and moon evokes God’s encompassing presence (cf. WCF 3.7), shielding from both physical and spiritual harm, and confirming that ultimate safety lies in Him alone.
