Psalms 93

Overview. This chapter celebrates the sovereign reign of the LORD as eternal, unshakable King, emphasizing His power over chaotic forces and the permanence of His holy rule. Situated among the enthronement psalms, it declares God’s supreme authority not only over creation but also over the powers that seem to threaten order, grounding confidence in His lasting covenant faithfulness.

• The psalm opens with a bold proclamation of the LORD’s kingship, highlighting His majesty, strength, and the stability of His created order (v. 1).
• It affirms the eternal nature of God’s throne and His self-existence "from everlasting" (v. 2).

Connections. Following Psalm 92, a song of thanksgiving for God’s faithfulness seen in judgment and deliverance, Psalm 93 deepens the theme of divine kingship by focusing on the timeless and unrivaled reign of the LORD. Its emphasis on God’s supremacy over chaotic waters sets the stage for Psalm 94, which takes up the theme of God as judge who rises against the wicked—those human expressions of disorder who oppose His rule. The stability and holiness affirmed here provide the theological foundation for the moral accountability that chapter 94 will address.

What it teaches. The psalm teaches that the LORD alone is King, reigning with eternal authority and unrivaled might over both creation and chaos (WCF 4.1, 5.2). The “floods” echo the ancient Near Eastern motif of primeval waters representing disorder, but here they are subordinated to the greater power of God, who established the world so firmly it cannot be moved (Gen 1:6–10; WCF 4.1). His throne is not a recent appointment but established from eternity (WCF 2.1), and His holiness is not temporary but marks His house forever (HC LD 10, Q&A 30). The steadfastness of His statutes reflects the immutability of His character and covenant order (WLC 142). This divine might is not arbitrary but exercised in maintaining a holy, orderly creation.

Apply. Stand firm in the confidence that the world’s chaos does not outrule God’s throne.
